Virtuosos is a classical music talent show, broadcast on the main Hungarian TV channel (M1 – Magyar1), focused on scouting after youth with the strongest potential in any of the classic music instruments or classic songs. Contestants perform classical music pieces, sometimes original, sometimes with small changes and modifications, however, the show is not only about the classic music, but also features songs written for symphonic orchestra, movie soundtracks and crossover forms. Their performance is rated by a jury of five, each of them with a background of a professional musician, songwriter or conductor.
Besides filling the role of an entertaining talent show, the TV show aims to bring the unparalelled treasure, that is classic music, closer to the hearts of its audience.
The very first of the series went off at 17th Oct. 2014 and lasted until the 19th Dec. It was also broadcast by Duna World.
Competitors are bracketed into three age groups; little ones (below 10), teenagers, and grownups. After the qualifying rounds, the professional jury allows nine musicians of each age group head forward, to the semi-finals. Later on three rivals push along to the finals, where the game will be settled. There is also a grand finale, where each winner of the groups have the chance, to once again, show off the best of their abilities and a favorite is chosen by the TV audience, that’s able to vote via SMS and mobile apps, like in any regular TV talent show. Thus the grand prize winner of the contest is selected.
The prize of each group’s winner is an appearance on an American stage; the Avery Fisher Hall of New York, the Roy Thomson Hall of Toronto or the Kravis Center of Miami. In addition to this opportunity, they also get their very own record. The grand prize winner, besides these two rewards, also gets a million HUF each month for the next year! (roughly $42 000 or 38 000€)
